2026 MAG Airport Travel Survey

Thank you for your participation!

About the Survey

This spring the Maricopa Association of Governments (MAG) airport travel survey, conducted in partnership with the Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport and Mesa Gateway Airport, collected more than 9,000 responses. This survey focused on ground transportation trips to and from the airport. Everyone who participated helped improve understanding of how residents, visitors, airport employees, and people picking up and dropping off passengers travel to and from the airport. We want to extend our gratitude to the participants who provided this important information that will inform regional transportation planning and improve airport access for all.

About This Survey

The Maricopa Association of Governments (MAG), the regional planning agency for the Phoenix metropolitan area, conducts travel surveys to inform future transportation planning. MAG contracted with WestGroup Research (WGR) and HDR Engineering to conduct the 2026 MAG Airport Travel Survey.

In partnership with Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport and Mesa Gateway Airport, this effort focuses on travel to and from the region’s two commercial service airports. Understanding how air passengers, greeters, and airport employees travel to and from the airport helps shape better regional transportation and improve airport access for everyone.

Airports generate unique trips (passengers, meeters/greeters, employees). Understanding how people access the airport helps MAG update its travel demand model and plan roadway and transit options.

Yes, both Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport and Mesa Gateway Airport are included in the 2026 effort.

Data collection started in February and concluded on May 15, 2026.

Privacy and data use

Responses are combined with other data to update MAG’s regional travel demand models. These models are used by local and regional planning agencies to prioritize transportation improvements that best fit regional needs. Results are analyzed in aggregate for planning purposes only.

This survey is looking to understand how you get to or from the airport, including what travel modes you used (car, bus, rideshare, etc.), departure and arrival time, travel party size, and locations. We also collect limited demographic and household information to properly classify responses and ensure data quality and representativeness. Your responses are kept confidential and used only in aggregated form.

Authorized interviewers wear official branded vests and visible badge/credential. If you are unsure, you may ask to see their badge or contact us below to verify the survey. Interviewers may be stationed at various locations within the airports (e.g., terminal/gates, baggage claims, rental car centers, cell phone lots, and transit/Sky Train stations) on weekdays. You may complete the survey with the interviewer on a tablet or you may be given a invitation card with unique access code to finish the survey online after your travel.

No. Individual responses are confidential and used only for planning in aggregate.
